I have always argued against the fact that the controls in ST1 are unusual, and actually love how they work, and how you can easily change the direction that Mike faces in midair without having to worry about Mike himself moving (like you could be jumping across a gap to the left, but then press up while performing that jump in order to attack an enemy that is coming at you). I've always thought that it all works very well, although I was so young the first time that I played ST that I don't actually even have memory of my first time playing it, so I suppose that the fact that I grew up with the game is likely a large part of why nothing about it even phases me these days. Regardless though, welcome to the board! People who love StarTropics really are few and far between, so we hope that you enjoy your stay at our quiet little corner of the internet.

I honestly didn't believe you regarding the secret double hearts in the Mountain Tunnel, and had to pop the game in and try it for myself. You have officially blown my mind, and I can't believe that after all these years you have taught me something new about the game that I didn't know. Never would I have imagined that there would be a grass tile that acts as a switch, it's not a behavior that appears anywhere else in the game! At least to our knowledge... Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. Also, here's another secret in the Mountain Tunnel that I don't think is common knowledge. It's a really strange hidden tile that doesn't seem to serve any particular purpose.

It will be very interesting to see if this increases the overall interest that exists for StarTropics at all. People will of course be buying the console for games like Super Mario, Zelda, Mega Man 2, etc., but once they get tired of those they will hopefully move onto the other games and end up checking out ST. In fact, this is probably the best opportunity that has ever existed for getting more people to learn about StarTropics. Having the game on the Virtual Console and eShop has been good, but with this the game is pretty much being forced into the hands of people who have likely never even heard of it, so it can really only end up being a good thing for us. Let's hope that once people try it they realize what they've been missing out on for over 25 years, and start demanding that the series continue.

That's awesome Matt! I'd like to think that over the years, StarTropics has helped all of us out in some way. I hope it works out for you!

You can always count on me for dungeons! If a team was put together and we had a clear plan on what we wanted to do, I would definitely be game, whether in the near or distant future.

Thanks for posting these Coralcola! I have to say there there are definitely a few from that second link that I am really enjoying. It's great to see that even 25 years later people are remixing StarTropics tunes!

I definitely can't say that I've heard of that glitch myself. Both you and your friend owned copies of the game, and both copies apparently had this problem? Were you both possibly using a Game Genie or something which may have interfered with how the game was supposed to work? The one that happened most frequently was in level 1 in the cave, where you can walk into the wall and warp right to the end of the game... Wait a second, why does this not sound familiar? I've been super busy lately so maybe my mind is just fried, but I honestly don't think that this is ringing a bell. I'd love to hear more about that!

Raocow, a Let's Player well known for playing Super Mario Bros. hacks and fan games has decided to try something a bit different, and is currently playing through StarTropics! He has never played the game before, so it is really interesting to see his perspective on things as a first time player. Expect lots of "this seems like Zelda" comments in the first part however, as that's pretty much the norm for anyone who sees StarTropics for the first time these days. I also know that Raocow's commentating style isn't for everyone, although I thought that I would share it for those who may be interested!

A StarTropics wiki sounds like an interesting idea, although while I'm not totally against it, I do feel that StarTropics.com already does a very good job at providing information regarding the two games and their content. I suppose if there was a wiki, there could be dedicated pages to different characters, items, locations, enemies/bosses, etc. although I feel like the miniscule amount of information that we have on many of these things would result in a bunch of pages that are little more than a couple of sentences. When it comes to games like Starfy, the North American game came out in 2009, which was well after the internet and wikis became an easily accessible thing. Therefore it makes sense that, while fairly obscure, it has more information floating around on the internet than an obscure game from 25 years ago. Back when StarTropics was all of the rage ( ) there was no internet to share information on, and by the time game-specific wiki sites became a popular thing there were very few people who had the knowledge to put such a thing together. Of course we do have the power the create one today if we so wish to do so, and if anyone feels up to the task then they can definitely go for it! I may even add in a few entries myself, although overall it is not a project which I would have interest in taking control of, and I still do fear that many elements of StarTropics might not have enough information to really warrant individual pages, which is why StarTropics.com's way of listing things works fairly well.

I had been reading the first word as "buRsts" for some reason, although as soon as I realized what it really was, the rest quickly fell into place. There aren't too many twin statues in the ST universe. *The Statues of Twin Sumocho*

Well it has been five days without any more responses, so I guess I accidentally broke the game. My bad! For Question 3, there are five anklets in the first dungeon of Chapter 6, and one in the first level of Chapter 7, for a total of six. I really would have liked to have seen more of the Anklet in ST1 (and maybe even see it make a return in ST2) as it allowed for some pretty cool puzzles. One of the things that made the original StarTropics so great is that just about every single level introduced something new, and you were always being given some sort of new item to use or obstacle to overcome. In my mind it is a perfect experience that not many other games have been able to replicate! As for the Golden Nuggets, they for some reason reward you with 1020 points. I have no idea where they got that strange number from! Anyway, that is it for my questions. Who's up next?

1: Nine is what I was looking for! It never made sense to me why the easiest to find secret island in Chapter 6 had the Big Heart, while the Big Apple island was more out of the way. Having it the other way around would have been funnier, but oh well. 2: There are two rooms in the Ghost Tunnel which require you to kill all of the ghosts before you can proceed, then there is the Maxi fight, and finally a room in Chapter 5 near the end of Captain Bell's Tunnel! The Hermit's Tunnel does not contain a Rod of Sight. 3: Chapter 7 only has one, although there are a couple of rooms where a secret tile appears once all of the enemies/boss is defeated, which allows you to cross a two tile wide gap. Unfortunately you have undershot the Chapter 6 number a little bit. And no love for the Gold Nuggets, huh? It's such a strange number, I'm honestly not sure why they didn't just make it an even one thousand. If no one gets it before the other remaining question is answered then I will give it away for free.

1: I don't believe that this is correct, although you are making me worry that maybe there are some secrets in StarTropics 1 or 2 that I don't know about. If you are 100% sure that your answer is not less than 10, then I would love to hear all of the locations! 2: Very close, but not quite. 3: Again, you almost have it, but are a little bit off. 4: You added in an extra "A" (it should be Rob Crusocola) but that's close enough! 5: Correct! 6: Your second guess is only a little bit off!

Ah! Nicely done figuring those out Scotty. Trying to use boss names completely slipped my mind. Here are my questions! We have all played StarTropics so many times that I'm sure most of us could probably beat it blindfolded. It's time to think back to the things you have done and seen so many times, and see if you can puzzle these out without checking the game! (I also hope that none of these have been asked before, as I haven't gone through all 24 pages of this 10 year old thread to make sure haha) 1-How many Big Hearts can be found in both StarTropics 1 and StarTropics 2 combined? 2-What is the minimum number of times that the Rod of Sight must be used in order to complete StarTropics 1? 3-How many times does the Anklet appear in StarTropics 1? 4-What does Mike think the initials R.C. stand for on the skeleton that you can find in Chapter 6 of StarTropics 1? 5-How many people must Mike talk to before you can enter the stairs of the Coralcola dungeon in StarTropics 1? 6-How many points do you get for cashing in a Golden Nugget in Chapter 5 of StarTropics 2?

It is definitely a legitimate concern, although the only reason we will ever need to worry about it is if Nintendo ever does decide to do anything with StarTropics again. And if they do, then I suppose the domain name may be a small price to pay? Gellin is the owner however, so I suppose it's not really fair for me to speak for him haha.
