Very cool! It's too bad that StarTropics rom hacking never really took off, as you don't see people making their own custom versions of it like you with with Zelda or SMB. Have you ever considered trying to implement any of your ideas into the actual game?

Hi chronoarcaile2018, and welcome to the C-Island Forum!!! You have a great taste in games! I've played some games form the Atelier series myself, and have a platinum trophy in Atelier Rorona that I spent way more time trying to get than I'm willing to admit . It's always great to see another StarTropics fan arrive, so if you have any thoughts about the game or good ideas for discussions, please don't be afraid to start a new topic! See you around!

Really cool! Thank you for posting this here. Not just the article, but the comments are certainly worth a read as well. I think it's fun seeing the opinions and memories of others who grew up with StarTropics. It really takes me back to the days when I first played it, good times to be sure!

Hello! Anyone with a love for the classics is certainly welcome here. And I totally know what you mean about searching out games with that Zelda feel. Exploration, cool weapons, and big hearts heart containers is what it's all about!

Welcome Izumi! I'm Andrew, also known as Michael Jones, also known as Higsby. I have too many online names haha. But thank you for checking out the C-Island Forum! I am really happy that my LPs were able to introduce you to StarTropics, and I hope that someday you have the chance to try it out for yourself! And I know all about that Wii U problem! It's really silly, on a North American console it only allows you to select North American countries for your location. As someone who knows some Japanese, I have really wanted to leave some replies using kana and kanji characters on the Miiverse, although with no way to change the region of my console to Japan I have no way of inputting Japanese characters. It really stinks. I suppose the upside to having a North American console is that you can download StarTropics 1 & 2 from the eShop if you wish? Enjoy your stay!

what struck me most above all was the sheer personality of the characters and sense of adventure the narrative carries. This is really what puts StarTropics above and beyond games like the original Legend of Zelda for me. As a kid StarTropics was truly life changing, it was the first game in which I felt truly connected to the characters and the world, and was completely sucked into the narrative of the game. Even going back and replaying it today, I can still feel that sense of adventure that struck me so many years ago. But with all of that said, hello there! Thanks you for stopping by, and for sharing your experience with what is a game that so many of us hold dear. I think that you and I will get along very well, as Wario Land is one of my all time video game series (years ago I bought a Virtual Boy just so that I could play VB Wario Land!), and your DKC3 arrangements are superb, they definitely do one of my favorite games justice! And I joined the Discord server that you set up! I look forward to chatting more with you there. See you round!

That's absolutely awesome Scotty! I've always wanted to try Dungeons and Dragons, although none of my friends were ever interested in getting invested in such a thing. It's really cool to see that StarTropics inspired a D&D map based on it though, maybe now I'll have to find some friends who would be willing to try it out.

Thank you for checking it out Coralcola! The link to my older StarTropics LP has been in my signature for years haha, although I know that nobody ever looks at those things.

Five years ago when I started my YouTube channel one of the very first things I did was Let's Play StarTropics. To celebrate five years of video making I decided to give the game another playthrough, although this time I mixed things up a bit by having challenges added into each of the chapters. This is more silly than most LPs you've probably seen (the challenge for Chapter 2 was to beat the dungeon with only one hand!), although if you're just looking for some fun videos to watch then you will hopefully enjoy them!

So it wasn't common knowledge then! We've talked about so many things over the years that I honestly couldn't remember if any of this had been discovered before. I guess my memory isn't as good as it was 10+ years ago when I joined this place, I'm starting to feel like an old man.

So in case we haven't had enough of them over the years, this is another thread about Po's Poem. I've realized a few things over the past while that I honestly can't remember if we've ever discussed here, so I figured that I would just dump them all in one place for those who may find them interesting A few months ago I came across this thread on GameFaqs which piqued my curiosity. I discovered that Po will only announce the names of his Poem if you play the game on Review Mode, and that the final text box where he says them is cut off from his conversation if you are playing through the game normally. There are absolutely no other conditions which factor into whether or not he tells you the names, you can die as many times as you want or take as long as you wish to reach him in Review Mode and he will always say the names, just as he will never say them in Normal Mode regardless of what you do. So while I found this rather interesting, I thought that maybe it had been discovered before so I never bothered mentioning it here. Although it wasn't until I noticed an interesting bit of text at the bottom of Page 11 of the instruction booklet that I figured maybe it was worth bringing up: Thus the man in Chapter 6's question of "Are you a Game Master?" is indicating that only someone who has played Review Mode could know the names! I'm probably extremely late to the party and the only person in the universe who didn't realize this, or perhaps we had this conversation years ago and I just totally forgot, but regardless I thought I would compile all of this information into one place in case someone else out there was ever curious what was up with Po's Poem. Now the only question that remains is if there's some way that hasn't been discovered yet which allows you to actually enter the name into the game and unlock the super secret 9th Chapter! (probably not ) Also, when asked the question by the man it is interesting to note that with the spaces provided the first word of the answer appears to have only five letters. Are we to assume then that in the end Po decided to name his poem "Climb Up The Mountain"? As the other title wouldn't fit due to "Splash" being six letters long!

The real problem is that Excitebike is #13 on that list, thus beating out StarTropics and a ton of other great NES games. It's iconic for sure, although if I were to make a list of my favorite NES games I doubt it would even make it within the top 100. Cool find though Coralcola! It's always nice to see ST get some well deserved recognition.

I unfortunately never had the opportunity to call the service back in the day, although I always dreamed of trying it! Hearing one of the counselor's memories of StarTropics is like a dream come true haha, it's totally radical! It almost reminds me of us back in the day, when it seemed like every month we would get a new member asking what the code was, rather than just looking for the threads made by others who had already asked. Good times! Thank you for sharing this!

So the NES Classic Edition is now out! And along with it, manuals for each of the included games have been scanned and uploaded online: www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/en/index.htmlThe console itself doesn't actually contain any of the manuals, either physically or electronically. Literally the only way to get instructions for the games is to look them up online. One really cool thing about the StarTropics manual is that it contains a pretty good scan of the letter, and even shows what it looks like once water has been placed on it to reveal the secret code! Overall it's an interesting little device. Although something to note: the version of StarTropics included in the console is the Virtual Console version of the game, and not the original NES version. As such names like "Yoyo" have been changed to "Star", but otherwise the game is pretty much the same. Some of the sound effects also sound a little bit off compared to how they were on the NES, although I suppose that just has something to do with how the game is being emulated.

Unfortunately I think that a case like Pit being included in Smash Bros. is a little bit different than StarTropics being included in the NES Mini. Nintendo was likely just looking for some good first-party games to fill the console with, and then remembered that StarTropics was a thing and decided to include it. Unless people decide to rally in the streets and demand a new StarTropics game after playing it on the NES Mini, I doubt that its inclusion in the console will really do much to change the fate of the series.
You've got me thinking though, I wonder what they will do for Chapter 4 and the letter. Perhaps something like they did with the Virtual Console release? In this day and age I suppose it would be pretty surprising if they actually included a booklet with the console which contained instructions for each of the games, it will probably all be digital.
