From what we've seen, it unfortunately appears that this is not in the Japanese script. It's still a very interesting reference though! At least one person at Nintendo of America seems to have StarTropics on their mind.

In the StarTropics Discord chat dekutony posted an old Japanese StarTropics article he found. Here it is, along with an English translation done by myself down below: (NES) StarTropics - Nintendo An action RPG with a top-down view similar to that of "Dragon Quest" where you defeat enemies while solving a variety of puzzles. It has a system of changing screens that resembles the one found in "The Legend of Zelda". This isn't surprising as it's a game made by Nintendo. The inside of the caves can be quite puzzling, so the player won't get bored. The game is set in the southern islands and the main character is a 15 year old boy named Mike. He travels there at the invitation of his uncle who is a highly regarded scientist. However, his uncle is nowhere to be found... Using weapons like a yo-yo and bat, he sets off with the goal of safely rescuing his uncle. An American version of The Legend of Zelda? Whoa, this is the field map. The shaman who guides the protagonist to the caves. Without realizing it you yell "oh my gosh". The caves are tit full of danger. (Isn't that strange.)

Hey that's awesome! It's always great to see some StarTropics representation in rom hacks.

It was always my understanding that he was preparing to enter the Ghost Tunnel in some way. As you said, it's not entirely clear what he is doing in the picture, but he could be either investigating the gravestone or be preparing to push it Zelda-style like you said.

Very nice, Matt! Mike sure had to go through a lot of things most game heroes have never had to worry about. It sure is a shame he's never been properly acknowledged for his hard work!

Especially since the effort to add in a spirit is so minimal, compared to trophies where 3D models had to be made and descriptions had to be written. It just feels like Sakurai really hates us, as every other obscure Nintendo game under the sun has gotten a nod by SSB at some point.

ALSO: What's with the Octo strategy spoiler!!!!!! Spoiler? I'm not sure I'd consider it that. If they were showing a boss from way later in the game then maybe it would be a problem. Overall this is really cool though! I wonder why StarTropics never had a release on the 3DS eShop, as I definitely would have bought it there. It's great to finally have StarTropics on a portable console, although I would have preferred if it was in a form where I could actually own it. I guess you can't ask for too much though! As always I just hope that this introduces new people to the game!

Megaman 11 was a very nice treat after not having a new entry in the series for so long! After such a long break though, I can't say that MM11 didn't feel a little bit lacking compared to what I had hoped we would get. If we're lucky there will be a MM12, and hopefully now that they've gotten used to working with the series again any sequels will be truly spectacular!

I got Smash Ultimate for Christmas as well, and wow am I having a blast with it! I didn't really enjoy Smash for the Wii U, so for a while I had been contemplating whether I should even bother getting the new one. But I think the Adventure Mode really makes the game for me, and the Wii U smash just felt so void without it.
Otherwise I've also been playing Wario Ware Gold. Wario Ware is another series that I had grown weary of over the years, but Gold really stands up to its name and brings out the best of what the series has to offer!
A friend also gifted me Hollow Knight for Christmas although I haven't gotten around to trying it yet with all of the Smash I've been playing. I've heard it's really good though, so I'm looking forward to giving it a play through!

At first I didn't understand the connection that Smash Bros. has with the scene from ST you chose, but then I got it! Well done! I look forward to seeing anymore you make in the future!

Welcome to the C-Island Forum! Sorry that things have been a little bit quiet around here, unfortunately it's not often that new StarTropics news comes along to discuss, and over the years it seems like we've exhausted just about everything there is to talk about in the two games that we have! But from time to time new things do pop up! I remember being completely shocked by a hidden tile in Dungeon 3-5 that was brought to our attention by foulco not too long ago. Your rom hack is also definitely noteworthy, and has me thinking that maybe we need a ST rom hack thread where we can discuss such things. Following your link, I see that there's also a rom hack which reduces the delay in Mike's movement when changing directions, which now I'm actually kind of curious to try... But ya! We appreciate you taking the time to register, and hope you'll enjoy your time hanging out here. Waiting patiently with the rest of us for the day that StarTropics 3 is announced!... Or any kind of acknowledgement by Nintendo (of Japan) that ST exists really. A trophy in Smash Bros. would be nice.

Thanks for linking to this! As a collector you don't normally want to see such a thing done to a sealed game, but in this case I thought it was very cool to see what it looked like to open and brand new copy of ST! If you look at the price stickers on the front of the game you can see something that looks almost like a date? The $4 sticker has 10/98 on it, which if the game was sitting around for 8 years without being sold I could definitely believe the insane price reduction. But the $0.90 sticker has 09/12 on it. I wonder if that means it went unsold in 1998 for $4, then resurfaced again over a decade later for only 90 cents? Poor StarTropics. It definitely didn't deserve such a fate. I do partly believe that the cover art that is devoid of ninjas, totally radical dudes, or anything else that would have caught the eye of the average gamer back in the day did contribute to it not moving off of shelves. But to be honest I absolutely love the more atmospheric approach that ST goes for, and wouldn't want it any other way.

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention! I've noticed that lately there actually hasn't been any shortage of fairly big YouTube names who have been bringing attention to StarTropics. The Gaming Historian did an episode on the game, and the creator of the Boundary Break series even uses a (edited) picture of Mike Jones as his profile icon.
Then you have the inclusion of StarTropics in the NES Mini which proves that Nintendo hasn't forgotten about the series, and that they don't necessarily want us to forget that it exists either. I'd say that at this point, no amount of online coverage (or even official coverage/publicity by Nintendo) is going to change how the public feels about the series, and that interest in the series has sort of peaked. The one and only thing that I think could make a big difference is if somehow the Japanese market garnered interest in StarTropics, and showed Nintendo that the series has potential globally. That would sure be a cool sight to see!
