I figured I might as well get a new topic rolling here and try out the poll feature on this forum. SO... which game was your favorite, and why? Was it because of the bosses, the plot, graphics, gameplay, music... EXPLAIN!
I'd have to pick the original for myself, because I love the music and the sounds, it has my favorite bosses and enemies, I thought the plot was wonderful, not too complicated yet not at all boring, and it was the original anyway, so why not?

I'm gonna have to go for the first one as well. One of the biggest reasons I like it more is because of the tile jumping feature that Zoda's Revenge lacks. The bosses are very creative in the first game...not that the bosses in ZR aren't...but I like the ones in StarTropics better.

I'd say, the first one is my favorite. The tropical feeling which is created there is unique, there's no other game I know that plays in this class. ST 2 is a bit more "mainstream", traveling through time/space is often used by games.
So, I vote for the first!

I liked the multiple platform levels in Zoda's Revenge, but the style just sucked.
StarTropics had a awsome storyline.

I'm going to have to say Startropics 1.
The squarish movment and block jumping MADE the game man, I don't care what anyone says.

I agree that the tropical feeling the original game gives you is like no other video game I know of. Of course, the game control was great too!
I thought the multiple platforms in ST II were cool, and I did honestly like the plot (I admit it, I like the second game almost as much as the first ). I did like the orginial bosses more though, and the beepish-shriekish sound effects in STII do get annoying after awhile. HOWEVER, it gave the series some closure, so I can't talk too badly about it...

StarTropics was my favorite(as you can all probably tell). A lot of 'reviewers' with dinky little websites love to rip up the tile-jumping and play control. I do admit the the play control was kinda stiff, even for it's time, but it doesn't take long to master. The tile-jumping is what made this game fun. I don't know why they replaced the buttons in Zoda's Revenge with question-mark orb thingies. The first game's graphics were bright and fun, even if the maps were squarish. The bosses were fun, and every enemie didin't shoot bullets at you(like in Zoda's Revenge). The comedy was sutble and great. And I love the dolphins, especially after they saved me. How cool a thing to do in a game.
Zoda's Revenge had it's strong points too. The use of "tetrads" was kind of funny, even if it wasn't supposed to be. The maps had really nice graphics, but the in-level graphics were really dark, and very, very flat. Everything looked like it was sharply carved out of stone. The music was sometimes great in ZR, but it was otherwise annoying, just like it's sounds. They beeped and shrieked. The popping sounds of the first is what gave it it's fun noises and low-bass-like sounds in the music. The comedy of the first game was carried overy in various places, which was great. Flying on that flying machine was great! What I really loved was visiting different periods in time(although it didn't give the tropical feel of the first one). Visiting the wild west was fun. The saloon was sooo great. The two brawlin' guys were hilarious, and the saloon girls were funny when they danced. It was just great. And, of course, visiting C-Island again topped off the game pretty well! I mean, we even got to fight the c-serpant again! However, re-fighing all the bosses again was a bad idea... that kind of thing needs to be saved for Megaman games, where it belongs. Being able to control yourself when you jump was a bad idea too... that killed me so many times. Also, ZR didn't climax like ST did. Seeing and being on the spaceship at the end was so great in StarTropics, and then having it blow up. It just left us asking, "Holy mackeral! What next!?" And then the dolphin saves us. In ZR we just walk C-Island once again, and then get frustrated with fighting the same bosses again. I think the first game was much more dynamic in this sense, and many noticeable others.
In conclusion: Both games are great, but StarTropics was better.
Oh, I almost forgot: What the banana-cream-pie was with not having a yo-yo in the second game? GEEZE. The being able to attack diagonally was good, but the lack of yo-yo wasn't.
SO! In conclusion(again): StarTropics had a yo-yo, Zoda's Revenge didn't.

Boocola! Good to see you! There was another game for the NES that had a yo-yo for a main weapon. That game was called Yo!noid. It was created by CAPCOM and Domino's Pizza( ). The yo-yo is by FAR cooler in StarTropics.

Didn't Ness have a Yo-Yo for a weapon in Earthbound? I don't think it was his main weapon...but I seem to recall there being a Yo-Yo in there somewhere

Ness's weapon in Earthbound was indeed a yo-yo. The only reason I know this is because I have Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube, and Ness is featured with his yo-yo.
Tell me if this isn't strange though. Reading a little about Earthbound on Melee, started to make think for a minute, and research the game online. From what I've found, I'm beginning to think that somebody stole a lot of the ideas on Earthbound from StarTropics!!
First off, Ness's main weapon is a yo-yo. 2nd, the story tells of a young boy (who looks kinda like a younger Mike with a red cap) who plays baseball (like Mike) and has to save the world from evil aliens trying to take it over (the plot of ST I). Ness uses the stars in the sky partly for help (Southern Cross in ST), and uses a set of weapons called PK fire, PK flash, PK thunder, and PSI shield. According to Melee, the P in each stands for Psychic, and are tapped into by psychic powers by different characters (sound like ST II's psychic shock wave?).
Hmmmm... very interesting. I wonder...
Am I overreacting to all this, or are my fears justified??

The original EarthBound for the NES is copyright 1989-1990, whereas StarTropics is only Copyright 1990. Earthbound was a much bigger game than StarTropics, so it's only natural that Earthbound was in production first.

I had a hard time playing Zoda's Revenge, not because the game is bad - It's not, but the cart I was borrowing was pretty lousy, and the save battery'd crap out, and I'd lose my file about the time you went into the Dracula land, so I have no idea what happens after that.
I suppose I COULD just play it on an emulator, but...uh...that'd make too much sense.
-Makes mental note to do that.-
But yeah, love Startropics, try to play it each time I feel NES nostalgic.
Other popular NES nostalgia moment games are: Faxanadu, RC-Pro AM (Hence, the ava), and Dragon Warrior.

The point Mitch made about the yo-yo is what helped in my decision.
However, I liked them both about the same, just StarTropics 1 a tad more.
