Me, I'd have to say ST1 blew its sequel away. For one, killing things with a Yo-Yo was just seriously unusual. You really had to develop a skill for the game, what with the half second pause between button press and move. But those aren't the main reasons, no. Why do I like ST1 better than Zoda's Revenge?
Plain and simple. Storyline.
------------------
In Startropics 2, we're supposed to believe the words to an old doo wop song are the key to time travel. (Blink) In Startropics 2, we're supposed to believe that after everything they've been through, the only thing Princess Mica has to say to their hero is "Thank you, goodbye, stuff off, and we'll never see you again but I'm HAPPY about it!" (BLINK)
In Startropics 1, we had a very clearly defined goal which didn't have to rely on stupid jokes to work. Not that I don't appreciate calling Conan Doyle a hack, as every author deserves ribbing here and there on occasion, but I can only take so much fantasy before I require a little reality.
Go through island ruins, fight off restless spirits, crazy monsters, rescue the uncle from aliens? Unbelievable, but when compared to the goal of ST2 (Jump around through time and collect Tetrads for no d**n good reason), remarkably sane. At least when Mike went after the three Argonian 'magic cubes', there was a reason. They held a power that Dr. Jones didn't want Zoda to have.
In the end, I just end up thinking to myself that a lot more work, blood, sweat, and dreams went into the first game. The smooth animations, the challenge of it, how well the plot, however bizarre, went together...
I could rant on for a few more paragraphs, but inevitably, the mind moves faster than the fingers, and I forget things. But that's my vote.
Startropics 1. Always and forever.

Yes, I remember you too Auhin, I don't know if it's because me and MJ have good memories, or that the "senior" members have been able to go through all the posts on the entire forum... Either way, don't be a stranger around these parts!!

I loved both games to pieces, so it was hard for me to choose. Each was a great, and enjoyable game in many respects -- just depends on what you're into.
Star Tropics will always hold a place in my heart as one of the best NES games out there. I loved the music, very suiting for every situation, place, etc. and the sound effects also worked well with this. The gameplay's fun, and I never tire of it. It's been awhile since I've played it, but I'm inspired to give it another go. :D
Zoda's Revenge was also fun. I don't see anything wrong with it... Mainly, it gave you more "control" and freer movement while exploring dungeons and whatnot. Had those platforms, which was fun to jump around on. Different, but it works, IMO. And as far as the music goes, I thought it was good. The sound effects, as others have said and I agree on this, could've been better. One thing that comes to mind is when you're low on hearts... >_>
Overall, both games were good. So which did I vote for? Zoda's Revenge. It was hard for me to choose, so I went with the one with the lower votes to make it a bit more fair, even if it's only by a little. :P

I agree both games were amazing and it's hard to choose which one to vote for.

I like StarTropics more simply because it was the only one of the two I had played way back when I first owned an NES. Last year I bought a "new" system and finally played Zoda's Revenge, but I still dig the first one more, maybe just because of the fond memories. The original was/is my all-time favorite NES game...
