Ever wanted to know what the real-world equivalent of a C-Island/StarTropics environment would be? Look no further than: C-Island, maybe?Which... as it so happens *not coincidentally I believe* all these pictures are from beaches and islands in the... Coral Sea... off Australia... where the game takes place.

I followed exods a couple weeks back but have yet to see him stream live. It might just be a timezone lineup issue, dunno.

I recently joined the Lost Levels forum in order to track down some prototype NES carts I've been looking for for some time. In the thread: forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=2219StarTropics came up (in relation to the recently released erred music coding findings), and it was brought up that a prototype was apparently passed around a few years back, in addition to apparently some extra rounds of quality control done in 1990 before the game was released... which may or may not be related to this music situation. Thoughts? Figured it would be something the community here would be interested in knowing...

If you've worked with hexadecimal or binary coding before, you can definitely relate to what he says near the end. Including an extra 0 by accident can make an entire civilization's worth of a difference... Haha absolutely! As he mentions in the video though, it is really strange that it would be corrupted like that unless the music was written in manually. I almost wonder if someone decided to take the bass out on purpose, as the song still sounds really nice without it. I wonder the same thing... Perhaps one of the slew of questions we'll have to ask in case we ever one day get to interview the StarTropics devo team? I don't recall hearing of an individual NES game that employed both of these methods of composing music in the development process. Maybe this is also the same reason the 300+bit overworld theme wasn't fixed, in that what ended up coming out still sounded just as good and wouldn't require extra time that late in development?

Since I was relatively young, I did pay attention to the "bodda badda bodda badda" sound that he's talking about in the background of the overworld theme, and just, naturally, thought that was how it was supposed to sound. I always thought it gave the song a little more of a... "tribal" touch to it or something? I noticed it didn't play over the entire tune, but didn't think anything of it. The way it was actually meant to sound is, of course, still awesome, it's just providing that background percussion over the entire track instead of different segments of it. The Argonian theme... wow. I also noticed that short "boowwwwww" background bass portion too years ago that clued him in to the error and, of course, just thought that was intentional. Hearing the bass line over the entire song definitely gives it a more... "spacy" or darker feel overall. If you've worked with hexadecimal or binary coding before, you can definitely relate to what he says near the end. Including an extra 0 by accident can make an entire civilization's worth of a difference...

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nuts. I just changed it... The color gradient is perfect too. Spacey, 80's, pleasing to the eyes... love it. PS: I wonder if there would be some way to integrate the Southern Cross itself into the background image (or the shooting star) if it's not too difficult? I LOVE having Zoda's ship at the top bar in place of C-Island. PSS: It changed the s-word to nuts up there... lol

A: Mike got treatment for his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder *for only FIVE easy installments of $99.95* Q: Why are Chief Coralcola and Miracola rather... "pudgy" while the Chief of Bellcola... isn't? P.S. Totally forgot this one existed, reading some of the responses again got me going.

Good one, lecayle! You're so bad at StarTropics that you force Baboo to open his big mouth on C-Island. The aliens come and abduct both of you, and you spend the rest of the game watching uncomfortably as Mike and Baboo both get awkwardly probed. After being placed back on C-Island, the two of you agree never to speak of this again. Mike has been so emotionally scarred from the whole experience that he immediately jumps off a cliff into the ocean and drowns. TV PILOT! Hmmm... You're so ungodly awful at StarTropics, you end up crashing the helicopter en route to C-Island, slamming it into a BP oil tanker, engulfing the entire south Pacific in an oil slick, destroying all the wildlife, turning the beautiful blue ocean straight black, all the lush greenery to poopy brown, and all the villagers... well... And don't even get me started on the whale or on Nav-Com... /Too morbid? Too close to home?

Hmm... I feel like something like this already exists, but don't know where. Let me do some digging this week when I get some downtime.

Welcome lecaycle. We're always happy to have another "appreciator" of the classics here. Most of us are from that "golden period" of gaming as you called it (though many out there I'm sure would disagree, as the SNES/N64 are viewed upon by many as the same, as I'm sure you know), though there are some significantly younger ones here too. We all appreciated the game's style, music, and it's "cinematic" qualities at times that separated it from the other games at the time (or maybe that's just me, who knows!). Those of us that remember the game from 1990/1991/1992 do acknowledge, even back then, how different some elements of the game felt, even though it used similar mechanics from other Nintendo games. Anyhow, I'm sure you'll fit in well here. I played around with ZeldaClassic like... once a few years ago, and like Scotty, got frustrated when things didn't seem to work like I wanted them to. Maybe I should go back in the near future and try it again, I'm sure it's been updated a bit since then...

Was about to post the same link, but STM was on it! Welcome back! I as well submitted a Mike ST request... and had to do some creative "rearranging/writing" to also get under 500 characters. Passion is a burden sometimes, eh? The submission page closes October 3, so I anticipate doing some other characters as well before then (Simon Belmont, Zero and/or ProtoMan), and probably submitting Mike again a few times (it doesn't require your name so how could it hurt?). Next time Zodastone or the other Twitch streamers are doing ST runs, I'll hawk the idea there too.
