Forget the Hollywood mess. If I was host, I'd have Wheel tape on C-Island. :)

Considering how I played the game in 1990 when it first came out, did I have a choice but to use the letter? lol I thought it was so cool though that you had to do that, it immersed me so incredibly with the game, and really made me feel like I was part of it (partly contributory I think to me still being so enamored with the game to this day). The one discrepancy here though is that I didn't actually dip the letter in water, as I wanted to preserve the letter as much as possible (thinking it might have OTHER uses), so I took my Dad's advice and used a spray bottle on the letter instead, to the same effect. Upon the revelation, many SQUEEEEEEEEEEE's of delight ensued...

I too was afraid that I would wreck the letter by actually dipping it in water so I just made my thumb wet and rubbed it on the letter until the massage had completely appeared. I still remember how happy I was when I saw the message appear for the first time ;D.

I played the game after my mother had bought, played, gotten stuck, and stopped playing the game; by that point, however, she had already used, and thrown out the letter. Sad. Stinking. Day.

I got my copy secondhand- no letter included- so my brother and I had to basically wait until they covered Startropics in those old How To Win At Nintendo Games type books you always find at garage sales and stuff.
