I was on the internet on google and searching some startropics stuff I clicked a link and started reading. It was showing characters from video games and under Mike Jones.....
Character 3: Mike Jones First Appearance: StarTropics (1991) Base Strength: High Defensive Power: Medium Speed: Low (Special) Abilities: Medium-Low
"Classic" Home Turf: Coralcola Town. Kind of like Nessie's Onett (you'll find greater solace in that connection soon enough), but instead of a complicaed, dense area of fighting it's a little more wide open as Coralcola seems to be. Also, instead of bystandards like automobiles that will hurt you, this may be the only stage whose unique onscreen features (remember, every area has some sort of unique person or thing that comes onto/leaves/moves the screen while you're (trying to be) kicking ass usually to interfere with you and your opposition) will only be good seeing as how the townsfolk seem to be so gosh darn friendly. The atmosphere here would also be borderline tropical rather than temperate suburban.
Than it hit me! Don't ask me how but I thought that maybe Nintendo started making Earthbound games instead of Startropics.I have 2 main theories!
1- Startropics was for NES so maybe they thought a fresh series like earthbound we be good on the SNES!
2-Ness used a yo-yo, Nintendo might think that seince they decided to make this series instead of ST that this character could use a yo-yo to!
These are just thoughts they are kinda dumb but at least This might be a reason!

I quote myself in the forum: lets try the poll out.
I really don't think there was much connection between earthbound and startropics (you should really play the game yourself...It's awesome!) And I really don't see any similarities between coralcola and onett. The whole story of earthbound is about evil aliens, but the whole feel of the game is kind of fun, and humorous, but with a dark undertone, like when you're in the cultist town "happy valley", or when you find out that the powerful people in your town are evil... but really its a freakin' awesome game!!! Play it.

LOL At least I'm not the only one here who has ever been curious, at one point or another, if the two games had some sort of association with each other. The whole yo-yo thing is kinda weird, but I don't see any substantial ties between Onett and Coralcola myself... I think EarthBound is a somewhat dark game, but in a way, I believe StarTropics is darker. The whole "end of a race, Argonia destroyed, kidnapped a scientist to decipher a code to find the remaining survivors to annihalate them and then be the all-controlling ruler of Argonia" is just about as dark as it gets, in my opinion... Zoda doesn't even bother trying to hide it, he just truly doesn't care

Zoda doesn't even bother trying to hide it, he just truly doesn't care And that...in my opinion...is what makes Zoda such a freaking awesome villian!!! Sorry that this was a little OT...but I felt it needed to be said lol
