DEMO www.box.net/shared/q4gfjuzy2iSo my friend and I were messing around and decided to mess with Game Maker to make the most stupid game ever conceived. It eventually evolved into something with good gameplay mechanics, based on Zoda's Revenge. I scripted it completely by myself and I feel that the engine and coding are very easy to understand and manipulate, so this can give me a chance to actually try something with it without running into a wall that makes me give up. Therefor, I somewhat successfully started making it into a possible Zoda's Revenge style game, with the topdown z-coordinate platforming aspect with different ledges of different heights you can jump upon. So what do you guys think?

I really like the way that looks! It looks like you recreated the physics from ZR just about perfectly as well ;D.

Looks great so far! But Is there any way for you to make this work on a Mac?

*APPLAUSE* Very well done! The mechanics do look great, I must say. It's interesting, the outside (in the game) has the ST kinda look for sure (I always wondered why we never saw any Mayan-type pyramids or ziggurats in the South Pacific or where have you in the first game), but the inside area reminded me A LOT of a Fester's Quest kinda thing. /No worries, I'm actually a fan of Fester's Quest, the two just seem on the opposite side of the spectrum from each other...

Well I'm planning to have multiple areas. Some of the dungeons are actually going to be in some city buildings and such, others are out in the tropics or forest or something.
I just scripted the death sequence and the yo yo, so it's all looking pretty good, keep an eye out, I'll post a demo soon. Ironically, the insides made me think of Fester's Quest too.

I'm finally sharing a demo, so I hope you guys will give it a try. It's probably one of the best games I've scripted up so far. www.box.net/shared/q4gfjuzy2iWASD to move G for items H for jumping F2 to restart There's not much levels, but I have the yo yo, shooting star, and super nova, also all the levels of the Shockwave according to your health percentage. Go exploring and try to find all the items I made so far in the game. in the outside there's Shooting Star Super Nove in the inside of the left most building, there's also: Jet packs Health items Keys

Fixed some bugs and now added the Alien Laser gun from ST1. It's at the outside. I've also added a completely new item, a grenade. It does 5 damage points, 4 to yourself if you touch the explosion, so watch out. The timer goes off when it hits the ground which is about half a second. It's also outside.
There's a cheat combination but you'll have to find it yourself.
If you want to have some fun, right click somewhere on the map.
Tip: if you want to locate places in my screenshots, look at where the dot is on the map on the bottom-right corner.
Ideas: In this game, I'm hoping to have a vast selection of places you can go to. I'm going to probably make it so you can go around in different places of the world, via Sub-C, and eventually later in the game you'll maybe go in space, via a new invention the Rocket-C.
Maybe go to places like the moon, then to planets like the Argonian planet or/and Zoda's planet.
The plot will maybe be that the planet where Zoda lived finds out about Zoda's demise, and that they attempt to create the ultimate superior clone by super technology, maybe Zoda Zero or some crap, who will then attempt to destroy Earth and the Argonian planet.

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone else want to try my demo and leave feedback? It would be appreciated very much because I've been working on this pretty hard.
Oh also, Scott, did the game run smoothly for you? No slowdowns?

Expect some feedback from me tomorrow (hopefully). I gave it a quick try on Friday and it was a lot of fun, the only thing that I thought was a little off was the fact that the enemies on the main overworld could climb to pieces of land that were above ground height (such as on top of boxes). Keep it up though, it's looking great!

The rock enemies is more of a prototype enemy, I just gave them that sprite for now. I'm planning on adding a lot of the enemies from ST1 and ZR to the game later on.
I tried to make a lot of the programming/physics faithful to the previous games. The yoyo should pretty much act just like the one from ST1. It retracts if you hit something and you can throw it again once you catch it just like the original.
The movement and platform engine is specifically based on Zoda's Revenge, and since everyone is already doing StarTropics 3, might as well make it Zoda's Revenge 2.
As far as progress goes, I just added missile weapons and enemies, most likely for later on in the game.
The levels are probably all just prototypes right now. I'll probably have the start of the game take place in a fictional version of Seattle.

Yea, CK...I did notice some slow framerate when I was in an area heavy with objects, enemies, etc...but when I was in the southern parts of the map where there is yet to be anything but random enemy spawns, it ran smoothly.

Mainly the outside? The platforms probably take a bit up, but I made a script so that they're disabled when far out of view horizontally.
Mike is also a bit heavily coded.
I'm not sure how I can optimize the game really, just make sure you're not running anything else that takes up a lot of CPU.
As for progress, I just scripted the bat and the cleats from ST1.
Edit: Updated the file to include the missile/bat/cleats items.
