I made a game like this back in the day, where it was a StarTropics 1 platformer. The controls were very similar to StarTropics' controls. I got bored and decided to try it again. It turned out better than the last one 10 fold. The controls are really great and feel just like ST1. I present you with a little demo of it. FIXED FOR SURE:www.box.net/shared/ir8epfl5m5Arrow keys to move, control to jump, shift to shoot, F2 to restart. VISTA FIX NOW UP

What did it say?
That's really dumb because I have no clue why it wouldn't work if it works on my computer. I assume it might be because of it initiating variables wrong, so I rebuilt it with the "treat all unitialized variables as 0" in this new one.
Try to redownload it and tell me if it works now.
Edit: Wait wait wait oh crap I just remembered.
Are you on vista? It doesn't work with vista.
Edit2: I remembered that there was a converter to make Game Maker 6 EXE files to work on Vista. I found it and converted my game. Try the link again.

The first one said "Unexpected Error Occurred when running the game." And then the fabulous "Debug...Send Error Report...Don't Send" window popped up. And finally, I got this error: "Runtime error 216 at 00431C61"
I've tried on 2 different computers now and I get the same things. They're both running XP

That's really lame. Game Maker works on pretty much all XP window's computers. I don't understand why it would error.
I made the game from scratch on a new computer so I don't get why it would error like that.

Really huge major update. A lot of more stuff has been done to make the game more solid. Your weapon is a full actual yo yo now. A lot of graphics have been implemented, like throwing, jumping, dying, getting hurt. There's more than 1 level which you can view with the KEYPAD minus and plus buttons. Level 2 kind of shows how this could possibly be converted into a topdown game and possibly make one of the most accurate StarTropics clones ever, at least in my view could be. The simulation is pretty solid to the actual game. There's even a small Donkey Kong level I did for fun when I got bored. www.box.net/shared/p1d3astmsePress F1 for more info when you play the game.

What does yours say? Is it a Windows error or a Game Maker error? This is bumming me the hell out. I worked hard on this and I want to showcase it to you guys. It doesn't even use that much CPU or anything and I have no clue why it wouldn't work. Matt uses Game Maker himself. If this one doesn't work then I don't know what will: www.box.net/shared/o14pai1zan

So is anyone paying attention to this thread anymore because I found why you couldn't run it.

It's like a ghost town in here. So you found the error's cause? What was it? I'll try the game out later, though. I've got some stuff to do at the moment.

I put the whole tileset of ST1 in the game as a background image, and you all couldn't run that. I got 3gigs of memory and a pretty decent video card. I removed it in the latest version: www.box.net/shared/ir8epfl5m5

Hey, I just played this. Wow this was really fun! It's got the exact same feel as ST1! I managed to beat it. You should make more of this, it's really good. I would suggest that you change the jump key from Shift to something else, though. I get that pop up meny asking for stick keys (when you press Shift 5 times). And since jumping is so frequently used, I'll get that message a lot, unless I interrupt it by pressing any other key. Now, a more in-depth criticism. It'd be awesome if Mike fell a little faster when dropping long distances. Well, I guess the engine's just 2 steps short from perfect. Changing the key is no big deal, so I guess it's virtually just one very small step short from perfect. =3 You've outdone yourself, man! Please make ST3. Party pooping time: One more thing that felt odd was the switch that revealed the rest of the world. While it's cool that you made switches that work, turning the rest of the terrain on because of a switch felt kinda akward. XD But I guess that's a beta of how doors would work so, it's cool. Keep it up!

Thanks man. The switch thing to show the rest of the room was kind of an idea I came up with. Sorry that you don't like it. It's not supposed to be the door, I'll get to making those later, it's just something I thought would be cool to make, a puzzle feature, where you need to find something like a switch to be able to access more of the room.
I thought of also making it into a possible booby trap thing where it gradually closes in unless you find the switch/item to turn it off.
I definently need to make more enemies and all that's for sure.
As for shift, yeah I realized that, my friend told me about that when I hooked her up with the game. I turned my sticky keys off long ago, but I'll probably change the button setup.
I'm really proud of what I made with this so far, I couldn't believe how close I made it feel to the actual game. the second room is supposed to demonstrate how I could possible make this into a topdown engine instead of a platformer engine.
I hope you also liked the yo yo, I thought it was cool how I programmed that.
You all will definitely see more around.

Naah, it's not that I don't like it, it's just that it felt a tad weird. And for a game like StarTropics, you know you don't want surprises. XD j/k. If you want to roll with it, it's ok, I mean, as long as it doesn't break the game. Oh, major kudos for the Yoyo. The animation was fluid (even more than in the original) I never expected to see the Shooting Star, so I was like "Oh heck yeah, I gotta beat Octo the Huge with the limited Yoyo!? Now that's cruel!" XD So now that you have the engine... how long will it take you to make more maps? Do you need any more kind of programming? I reckon you used Game Maker if I'm not mistaken. That's one thing I've been trying to learn but I NEVER found a single helpful tutorial on how to get started...

I'd advise you to go on the Game Maker forums, they post a bunch of tutorials and stuff.
The super nova is actually in there too. In the first room, if you get the hearts without getting hit once you can get it, or you could just hit F3 and scroll up with your mouse and it'll increase your health.
