That sounds about right. I vaguely remember a middle-aged, pudgy, balding guy wearing a straw hat, sunglasses, and maybe shaking some maracas...

I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon of what others have said previously in response to the original post as all of these things I am sure contributed in some way to the choice to not continue the ST series. Having been in the prime marketing demographic when ST1 was promoted and released, I know that it received a lot of hype. Cover of Nintendo Power (with two 10+ page tutorials taking prime real estate in this holy grail of gaming), commercial spots, you name it, it *was* the must have game when it came out, and the game sold well, but Nintendo was hesitant to take away from the momentum that SMB3 had going for it at the time, especially since it needed to give the Mario Fan Base a big boost after SMB2 left many Nintendo regulars very disappointed. They made it their sole priority to make SMB3 a rousing success - something very blatantly demonstrated by featuring it as the final match in "The Wizard" staring Fred Savage. Releasing ST1 on the heels of the movie left fans in a quandary of whether to buy SMB3 or StarTropics, and since SMB3 was released first, and was included with the console, ST just didn't have a leg to stand on. Same for parents who wouldn't dole out $54.99 for a game, one of the highest release prices for any Nintendo Game for that particular console.

Really? I've never heard of the SMB3 thing, I know they didnt release SMB2 here but modified a jap game called doki doki panic, SMB "lost levels" (SMB2 in japan) was released with SMB allstars on the snes. They didn't release smb2 here because it had already been out in japan and some people didnt like how hard it was.
