You know, I was thinking. We all love ST. I've never known anyone who hates the game or thinks its okay. So why did it flop? Anyone got any theories?

My guess would be that people didn't know about the game when it was released. The people on this forum are some of the very few people that I know that have even heard of StarTropics. I could ask about everyone in my school, and they wouldn't have the slightest clue what it is.

That's a decent theory. I would have never heard of the game if my mother hadn't bought it for herself...and I'm glad she did ;D

Let me ask you this... if Star Tropics had been really really popular, would you have enjoyed it as much?

That's a good question...and I'd probably have to go with no. One of the reasons it's such an awesome game probably owes itself to the fact that it WASN'T very well known.

Well to be honest i didn't even know that it wasn't popular. So what do you mean by that it's flop? Didn't it sell at all or how much? Compared to the other nintendo games it was flop? That's new. I could think that startropics is so popular, but i guess now then .. Maybe they could have done more publicity for this game somehow? My sister bought this game sometimes, but no one in here doesn't either know about it, but course everybody know mario and so on. But maybe it's true like you said. It's fun to know, that so many peoples don't know about this game so you know you've had some kind of special game-expierience that many peoples haven't got.

Yeah, that does make it better, like sometimes I do with music, or websites, maybe...

It may become slightly more popular when the Revolution comes out.... considering that a lot of the older games will be very easily accessable.
I just learned of the game a couple years ago at the smash bros. IGN message boards, so I tried the rom, and liked it so much that I got the game off of ebay.

I agree with both. The other thing I think that made people not like ST a lot was that a lot of people I think felt it was a Zelda ripoff (which it isn't but... ). Combined, these 3 things could've easily killed a number of video games. To this day, I'm still ever thankful that a second one actually got released, because when I was young, I didn't think it was gonna happen. Either way, I loved ST from the very beginning, and I would've loved it just the same even if it had become as successful as Mario or Zelda did. ;D

Here are a few reasons why the StarTropics series failed: - People thought it is a Zelda ripoff.
- It was only released in the United States and Europe, but not in Japan.
- It is way too challenging.
- It was quite expensive.
AND
- It was being outsold by Super Mario Bros. 3 (ST1) and the SNES console and titles (ST2).

I don't think it was a Zelda ripoff. If it were, it would probably be a watered-down version of Zelda and it was far from that. Of course, since I had played the Zelda games about umpteen times, especially the first one, I guess I was tired of them and wanted something new. I discovered StarTropics via one of Jeff Rovin's "How To Win At Nintendo Games" books that I mentioned in another topic. I rented it, along with "Adventure Island" at the videostore that one day in the late spring of 1994 that's mentioned in my signature. I don't think I need to tell you that I didn't spend very much time playing the other video game, when I realized how cool StarTropics was!

There was? Do you know if it's available to see on the internet?

Yeah, we had a discussion on here about the ST commercial, remember S2H? I believe it was said to have had a bunch of people playing some kind of tropical music during a sunset or something to that effect...
