So in the past few years, I've gotten back into playing a lot of board games and card games with my posse. Cards Against Humanity and Settlers of Catan have been the two favorites. Fluxx has been pretty popular, as well as the Back to the Future card game.
I collect game show board games too, including old ones from the 50's and 60's, which are usually rare and sometimes not in the best of shape anymore. Anybody actually "collect" board games at all?

My wife and I are big board game (read: Tabletop) fans as well. We enjoy the card games like Apples to Apples and Killer Bunnies but also like the classic board games. One of our favorites is an oldie called Careers, which plays somewhat similar to Monopoly but with plenty of differences that make it lots of fun. We also like the recently popular Carcasonne and Settles of Catan.
Fun side note: In my Game Design class this month, our big assignment was to create our own analog (not digital) game. I created my own board game with a Zombie Apocalypse theme. It turned out to be a lot of fun to play.

Apples to Apples is fun too, but after getting Cards Against Humanity, A2A has been collecting dust. I also watch Tabletop on Geek and Sundry with Wil Wheaton with some regularity. I recommend if anybody here like board games to check them out (Ticket to Ride and Star Fluxx have been two of my favorite episodes so far): geekandsundry.com/shows/tabletop/Interesting you mention creating your own board game Scotty. In my closet (somewhere, next to the dead parrot and dodo skeletons) is a board game I made in 8th grade for a math project. It was entitled "Magical Squares" and involved using algebra to help solve a classic Magic Square setup. I adored math as a child (and to this day)... Maybe I should make educational video games for a living...

We play a lot of the more obscure games here at work. Many can be found here: boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgameTwilight Struggle is great (a former co-worker of mine actually made this one) Other games I've enjoyed playing in the past: Puerto Rico Chaos in the Old World Small World The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow Betrayal at House on the Hill Twilight Imperium Race for the Galaxy I'm sure there's more. We've played so many different ones here but these are the one's that stand out to me.

Shadowrun, D&D, as well as my own version of tabletop rpg: 9999. Its a hodge podge of rules right now,but the magic system is based on the magic from FFIII. Combat and skill use is from shadowrun 1st ed., and the d20 mechanic.

Speaking of Monopoly... Wonder if I should make a StarTropics themed Monopoly. And if I did... should I base it on ST1, ST2, or both? Anyway, my favorite board games are: Bionicle (even though it can get a tad unbalanced when a character starts to do well), and... well.. an RPG-ish game I made where you travel through time, and use potions to gain various effects that affect you both in battle or/and moving on the board. It still has its flaws, but I really dig it. Oh, and absolutely RISK.

It would also provide you more locations from which to base the properties on (as well as other things).

I can't really say if this will become a favorite, but I'm pretty pumped for it. This is the only thing I've ever backed on kickstarter.
