Actually if anything, Nintendo usually throws in characters that they are interested in rebooting. Just look at Pit in Brawl, he hadn't had a game in years, but then Uprising came out not too long after that. So I definitely wouldn't say that the character roster is always composed of just the most popular characters. If that were the case, how did ROB, Mr. Game & Watch, or the Ice Climbers ever get in there? ROB and Mr. G&W are technically considered historically-important to Nintendo. Mr. G&W's role in the Game&Watch handhelds was Nintendo's first success in the video game market, and ROB was a necessary gimmick needed so that NES consoles would be sold in toy stores. Ice Climbers? They were likely added for the WFT factor. Pit was added in Brawl for the same reason as the Climbers (as a surprise retro appearance), except Sakurai got the idea to use Pit in a new game a couple years later. At the very least, Japan knew of them (unlike Mike).

Since Little Mac just got revealed as a playable character for Super Smash Bros. 4, the chances for Mike Jones getting into Smash Bros. is dramatically increased. Unlike Mike, Little Mac had a Wii game released in the recent past and is still fairly well-recognized in both America and Japan. I would like to counter that claim with this factoid that I originally saw in the starmen.net fora: Let the speculation begin.

And since Sakurai loves to surprise people (and you already probably know how extremely little known Mike is, adding the fact that he's unknown in Japan) I can think of no other character to reach his level of obscureness.

He could come as an assist trophy. Sakurai stated that he wants as many assist trophies as possible.

Takamaru (Japanese exclusive Nintendo game) is announced on getting an assist trophy. Sakurai later says that another forgotten game is going to get an Assist Trophy announced soon. StarTropics??

Let's hope! I'd even be happy if Mike just got a regular Trophy. Anything will do at this point!

Welp, nothing at all is mentioned in the 3DS version of Smash. Lets hope for more hope in the Wii U version.

Is there any chance of a trophy? Or have people already figured out what all of those are?

I'm sure the 3DS version has been completely dissected by now. Our only hope for this iteration is something in the Wii U version.

So far, it looks like SSB has once again left Mike to rot because "he's not Japanese".

They have the North American Rusty from Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and Rayman, who is not very popular in Japan, so there could be hope for a Mike Jones trophy as they are focusing on North American audiences. Little Mac was created for the western audience, as he got little to no attention in Japan.

Japan knows who these characters are regardless of their popularity since their games were released in Japan. Mike's games never were, so he never had a chance.

I read an article the other day where Sakurai address the question, "How are characters selected [to be in Smash Bros.]?". Here's a bit of what he had to say: I believe Mike has a few strikes against him. 1) popularity isn't there overseas. 2) He believes ST has no future 3) Potentially overlaps with Ness some That said, Nintendo did just announce the first DLC yesterday which introduced Mewtwo as a fighter. So there's still hope!

That really makes me wonder how the heck Ice Climbers ever got in there. I also read that the trophies in the 3DS version of the game were based more around games that appeared on handheld consoles, so that means Mike still may have a shot in the Wii U version!

Unfortunately, there is no representation whatsoever in the Wii U version.
