It seems to make the game a lot harder when you dont have Dr. J's letter...

Ya. I don't think Nintendo ever thought that people would buy used games.

I don't think Nintendo realized how much things would change in a quarter century...

Forget the Hollywood mess. If I was host, I'd have Wheel tape on C-Island. :)

LOL, and LOL. ;D According to Wikipedia at one point, it said the letter was supposed to be used to avoid copyright infringement, because the game supposedly couldn't be completed without the letter, thus supposedly avoiding somebody being able to hack the game somewhere else. Kinda makes sense, but I'm not 100% sold on that idea... A bad side effect, either way, obviously was that if you bought the game used and didn't have the letter with it (until the internet), you're stuck halfway through it!

I read this post and had to register to chime in on my experience. I bought the game in 1991. Actually, my father bought it for me as a gift from a Canadian Tire store-back when they actually carried games. I don't remember what ever happened to Dr. Jones' letter. I remember looking through the instruction book hoping it contained the answer. Of course, I never found out the answer. I used to guess the number for hours to try and get it right-a lesson in futility. I never got the number, so I used to erase my file, play till Chapter 4, get stuck, guess for hours; rinse and repeat. I never found out the code till around 99-2000 when my friend got internet on his computer, and I decided to look it up. Yeah, sucks for me. I still haven't beaten the game; I just never got around to it. I'll forever remember that annoying part in the submarine with that Shortcircuit-esque looking robot in the submarine asking, "Please enter the frequency" and that annoying robotic sound, followed by the< "dip it in water" part.....grrrrr...I wish I knew where that letter was so I could dip it in water.

You should try and beat the game. If you've spent that many hours on the game, wouldn't it just seem natural to beat it?
Anyways, welcome to the Island, max!
