Many of you have be wondering if it is possible to add in your own sprites into StarTropics III. Well, I'm more than happy to share with you how everything works currently.
First of all, it must be known that you cannot add any new assets into the game. The game is hardcoded right now to use certain files in certain situations. If there is enough interest, I might be able to add something in where it searches a directory and is able to load in any assets found in that directory and then provide something in the config file to fully customize the game.
So how do you currently customize the game then with your new assets? Well, if you look into the directory where you installed the game to, you will find three folders - images, music, sfx. All you have to do is to replace a file in those folders with your own. Once that file is overwritten, the game should load your file up the next time you start it up.
Images are stored in the .tga format which is recognized by most of the image editing programs such as Photoshop. This is what Mike's spritesheet looks like when you open it.
You'll notice that each sprite has dimensions of 64x32 pixels. Most movements are made up of 3 different frames, while attacking is made of of 2 frames. There are no sprites being overlayed anywhere in game. It just chooses one of the sprites based on the particular action.
You can modify any of the tga files to use your custom sprites as long as you replace each sprite with your own counterpart. You must also keep them in the same order, meaning, don't replace the moving left sprites with the moving right sprites or Mike will moonwalk everywhere!
Feel free to post any more questions you have related to this and I'll be happy to answer them for you.
