I wasn't really sure where in the forums to put this. Does anyone know how to open a Nintendo rom, as in open up the cartridge and see whats inside. I'm trying to fix my Star Tropics rom. I think there is something that came loose, because i can hear something rattling inside it. Any help would be greatly apprecoated.

I think the easiest way to do that would be to just use a screwdriver to pry it open. Careful you don't crack it though! Wouldn't want to damage that precious cartridge haha. ;D

Unfortunately, some Nintendo cartridges can't be removed using screwdrivers. My ST game, for example, has a type of screw that can't be open using any type of screwdriver. Somehow there's like a little metal ball in the screw head that prevents any type of object from getting in there. Most of my Nintendo games are like this, made so people purposely can't open them up and mess up their games. If your ST game is like this (and I bet it is), unfortunately, I hate to say that I think you are out of luck, unless you can take it to a video game expert who knows another way to open the thing...

Most NES games are held together by security screws, and you can't just walk into a hardware store and buy the kind of screwdriver that opens them, but you can order the necessary screwdriver bit from mcminone.com. Those screwdrivers can open NES,SNES,N64 and other things. I bought a pair of those screwdrivers last year.

Alright, hehe I got the cartidge open (don't ask me how, i don't want to go into detail, just know that is was a long and boring process) and the thing that I thought was broken was actually a piece of plastic that had broken off from the shell part of the rom. After screwing around with it for a half hour, I had managed to half get the battery out of it. After deciding that I just shouldn't bother, I taped the battery back in place and put the rom back together (this took longer than getting it apart). I decided I should give it one more try in the Nintendo before I decide to just get a new copy from eBay, and what do you know, after about the 50th try it actually worked, who woulda figured. So this is a very happy day for me ;D.

;D Congrats, I'm happy for you! If I ever have a problem with any of my NES games, I know who to come too... If worse had come to worse though and you had to have bought a new one, I know the most expensive I've ever seen one online was about $5, so you at least wouldn't have broken the bank too much...

Oh, and, just for clarification, I'm pretty sure its not called the ROM. The ROM is the software, the data. What you're calling the rom I would call the chip, or circuit board (I guess) No big deal, just a minor annoyance, really... At any rate I applaud your do-it-yourself skills for repair

Half-way off topic: I recently borrowed a bunch of old cartridges from a friend and they all seem to have the contacts (the part that connects to the system) pushed in too far. The only way I can get some of them to work is play them through my game genie, even then they take some tweaking to get them to work. My friend says they work fine on his NES, though. Has anyone else had this problem? Help would be appreciated.
