My little brother started playing Startropics today... and he dislikes it. He feels all the deaths are cheap, and claims he has no motivation to finish even the first chapter. I'm currently near the end of chapter 6 and I really love the game. But why do I have a brother who dislikes Startropcis, one of the greatest games of all time?

Give it some time. It took me a little while to get past the cheapness of all the water deaths...and those stupid snakes in the room 2 before C-Serpent. Keep encouraging him and give him some advice to get past some of the harder spots.
How old is he, out of curiosity??

Forget the Hollywood mess. If I was host, I'd have Wheel tape on C-Island. :)

I'm also curious as to what other systems you all own. If he started out with something like a N64, XBOX, etc., then his "appreciation" or "tolerance" of old-school gameplay might not be what yours is (I'm only assuming being older, you have a lot more experience with the NES era of gaming than he does). This might cause him to feel a bit jaded about what works with the old games and all the idiosyncrasies throughout... Outside of that, what Scotty said, give it some time and patience, and provide some encouragement. Same advice also can be handy when he's looking to find a girlfriend...

He's going to try to beat C-snake again this morning. Being half way through chapter 7 and somewhat of an expert on the game, I'll help him with the game. EDIT: He's in chapter 3 now.

It's awesome to hear that he's made it to Chapter 3! I find that a lot of people who heavily play newer video games can't stand older games, both because of the graphics (I'll take 8-bit over 3D any day) and the difficulty (which isn't even really that bad...in some cases anyways) that older games tend to have. It's the main reason that I dislike a lot of video games today, I like dying, getting game overs, having to start a level over again, and having to learn from my mistakes. Too many modern games make things too easy for the player by offering an unlimited number of lives (or way too many extra lives, I'm looking at you recent SMB games...), too many checkpoints, too many power ups, and a slew of other things that take the challenge out of video games. I'm pretty sure that it's all a marketing thing, video game companies are trying to grab the attention of entire families now instead of just those who love to play video games, a lot of people don't enjoy having to repeatably try something until they get it right and if someone feels this way about a game then it's not likely that they're going to buy any of the sequels, recommend the game to others, do other things that would result in forking more money over to video games companies. Wow I ranted on for far too long . But anyways, force your brother to sit in front of the TV until he beats it, he needs to know what it's like to play and beat a real video game! ;D

Haha...yea the Ghost Village can be pretty intimidating if you have no idea why you're getting hurt for no reason!!
Sit with him and help him to stay calm. Give him suggestions, but don't do it for him.
Congrats to him for making it this far!!! Keep it up, kiddo!!!

Update: He's enjoying StarTropics more than ever now; although he doesn't have much time to play, because he's playing the original Legend of Zelda as well.

That's great to hear! ST certainly isn't the easiest game, both in difficulty outright and with its good amount of secrets. Heck the only reason I can make it through the game so easily is from watching my own older brother play it so much.
Older games really are under appreciated these days. A lot of people complain about the movement systems being bad (I'm not directing this at ST specifically) but a lot of times that's what made the game. A prime example is Castlevania.

Actually I had the same experience of not being too enthusiastic about the game in my youth as i couldnt beat the octopus boss, and only coming to appreciate it later in my lifetime.
Musing over why this could be I can think of two reasons: First yes the game is difficult for younger gamers, and i think this is because some of the puzzles cannot be solved by repetitive behaviors such as leveling up or exhaustive searching.
Second the plot is actually far from literal at times quite allegorical and satirical so that it can be difficult to comprehend for a younger gamer who may nevertheless sense there is more going on than meets the eye.

I thought it was funny how I pulled through to complete the game back in October/November, seeing as I always gave up on 8-Bit games when I was little. But now I realize that I didn't want to give up on the game, possibly because I enjoyed the characters, or maybe the music, or maybe because I wanted to show my appreciation for this classic.

Ah... the graveyard... The first place that took me forever to beat back then... But that was SO long ago, I don't even remember the time when I couldn't find my way through that dungeon.
My 2nd "jam" was where I had to enter the infamous code.
And my 3rd one was probably Chapter 7 due to the difficulty.

Yeah, I had plenty of trouble with the graveyard and Chapter 7; although it was more the middle of Chapter 8 that annoyed me. But speaking of the code, I already was aware of the answer thanks to it's infamy.
