Hi,
Sorry for my bad english, I don't know this language really well.
Last week, I buy an old game "StarTropics". I had a big problem in the chapter 3. When I arrived in the dark purple tombstones, I try to take THE ROD OF SIGHT, but it does not appear in the box next to my yoyo. So I can't use it .... because it like I never take this item, but I try to take it ... !
So I was thinking, "It a problem with te game". I returned at the store and I take a new game of "StarTropics" ... but now, I have the same problem.
When I take the ROD OF SIGHT, I heard a sound like I have it ... but it does not appear in the box beside the yoyo ! Why ?
Also, In the chapter 2, when I take the Magic SnowMan ... nothing appends ! I heard a sound like I take it ... but I do not have it.
What is the utylities of the white "Magic Snowman" ?
Maybe, my old Nintendo is broken ?
Thank you for your collaboration!
Sorry for my bad english, I hope you understand me !
Take care

Hi there!
To use the rod of sight, first, pause the game. Then, push down on the control pad, you should see new items appear in the boxes below, one of them should be the rod of sight. Move to it, and press the A button to use it. You have a limited number of them, so use them wisely.
The same should apply for the snowman doll. Pause, push down, and select it with the A button when you want to use it. It is supposed to be used when you are fighting the boss (Octo the Huge). It freezes the water in his area, along with him, so you would want to use it when he gets close to you so you can attack him hard and fast.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Yeah I had a hard with that too. It caused me to think that there was poison gas in one room where there were ghost that kept hitting me. It was funny because it didn't make any since. I could stand in certains spots forever and not get hit but in other spots I would be killed.

This message relates to this thread specifically so I apologize in advance just reviving it a *little* -- I was revisiting this game after decades (i don't even remember playing it as a kid even though I had it - one of the few benefits of having a terrible long term memory), spent an hour trying to figure out why i was taking damage in these ghost rooms, thinking maybe I was not supposed to be here. I had gotten to this point not even knowing there were magic items in the pause menu! (Love for games that had an out-of-game manual)
So basically I just thought the game was supposed to be crazy hard, but the ghost village started me thinking a bug was at work. So I referenced a map online, saw these ghosts, though it was a render error, And yes, I too even thought there was poison gas or invisible/moving damage plates (or some crazy motion checking routine). I suppose in some sense they ARE invisible moving damage plates.
I finally came across this thread. So thanks to whoever didn't delete this forum/topic because it was very useful to me!
